AAFAME encourages it's engineer members to seek designations to further advance their career & their value to building owners. Currently 22% of our engineer members have a designation of some kind and it is proven that they are improving their career with better positions & higher salary.
The primary designation for the engineer members is the SMA (System Maintenance Administrator) offered through BOMI International (local courses hosted by BOMA Austin). BOMI also offers certificate programs: SMC (Building Systems Maintenance Certificate) & BEC (Building Energy Certificate). Additional BOMI designations include the RPA (Real Property Administrator) & FMA (Facility Management Administrator) for those interested in management positions. Visit the BOMI website for detailed information on these programs.
Those with a BOMI designations are required to attend 18 hours of Continuing Education every 3 years. AAFAME helps to fulfill this requirement as a recognized BOMI education provider. Members can receive credit for attending luncheons (1/2 hour) & training classes (2 hours). In addition you can receive credit (2 hours per year) for being a member and you earn additional credit (6 hours per year) by serving on a committee.
Another designation to consider is the LEED GA & AP (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) designations recognized by the USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council).
